The first thing that comes to mind when we hear the word “cinema” is entertainment, but it goes much further than that; cinema is art and culture. This seventh art aims to sensitize the viewer to beauty and makes them feel part of the narrative script within the film. It provides much more than just being entertained for a few hours… Watching movies also helps the population to build a general culture in various ways. Firstly, a film set in another place or distant time helps to learn about historical landmarks and places where we are unfamiliar with the culture and way of life of the people who inhabit them, whether they are real or fictitious, or even a mixture of both. Having a film culture provides us with the skills to later develop a critical eye for the visual content we consume, such as advertisements, music videos, video products, etc., and also to appreciate the quality of audiovisual pieces.

Benefits of Cinema

In addition to entertainment, as we have already mentioned, it provides other health benefits. The sensations after watching a good movie stimulate the senses and therefore benefit our bodies, such as:

  • Relax, distract, and reduce stress
  • Helps to see problems from another perspective
  • Motivates self-improvement
  • Develops creativity
  • Facilitates reflection on difficult topics
  • Empathize with the characters depicted
  • Conveys positive messages, providing teachings to children (hence the importance of using films as an educational medium)
  • Improves social relationships
  • Many films allow us to confront our fears

And these, among other reasons, are why we should dedicate a couple of hours of our free time to watch more movies and learn about audiovisual culture, taking advantage of the benefits it offers.
